Cufflinks have been used throughout history for more than 500 years to secure loose shirt cuffs. The use of cufflinks first started in Europe and by the 13th century, buttons were later modified with a piece of chain to secure loose ends. Before the use of buttons, people had to fasten loose ends with cords or ribbons. During the post Renaissance era, buttons and cufflinks became more ornamented with stamping, plate over-lay, and gemstones.
During the Industrial Revolution and after the Victorian era cheaper inexpensive cufflinks were manufactured and were in wide use. This was made possible due to the large open trade market and cheaper imitation materials that were being produced at that time.
There are three types of cufflinks which are flip-clip, rod, and chain cufflinks. Today, cufflinks are worn with some form of formal attire such as French cuff shirts, tuxedos, etc. We currently offer push through inlaid cufflinks and are currently designing new pieces to add to your jewelry collection.
